Who is Ms. Roskosky? Well let me tell ya....
Hello and Welcome to this site!
My name is Ms. Lisa Roskosky, and I am one of three Career & Technology Education Instructors for Canutillo Middle School. The courses I am teaching this year are Career Portals and 21st Century Skills. I am also the sponsor for the CMS Taon Yearbook! This is my 12th year of teaching at the public-school level. With the exception of teaching for a year in the DFW area, I have taught exclusively in the El Paso area. I have also worked with GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) through the University of Texas at El Paso. While working for UTEP's GEAR UP I worked closely with the class of Eastwood Trooper Class of 2014. I really enjoyed assisting those students in learning about college, but also in finding careers.
I have a Bachelor of Science in Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Management with an emphasis on Parks and Recreational Area Management and Special Events Planning from New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, New Mexico. I completed my Master of Education in Career and Technology Education with Teacher Certification in Business and Marketing Education from the University of Texas at El Paso.
I have lived all over the world, thanks to my father having been in the Military during my developing years. I was born in Lakenheath Mildenhall Middlesex Sussex England (yeah try writing THAT on those small registration lines) and hold Dual Citizenship with Great Britian and the United States of America. I lived in Bremerhaven Germany; Alamogordo, NM ; Biloxi, MS; and Attleboro, MA; before my parents finally settled down in Chichester, NH where I went to 2 separate High Schools (I started at Pembroke Academy and finished my last 2 years at Pinkerton Academy where my father was a Career & Technical (Vocational at that time) Educator). While a student at Pembroke Academy, I was introduced to the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) student organization, as well as working on the school Yearbook. While at Pinkerton Academy I got into their Marketing Program and was a member of Distributive Educational Clubs of America (DECA) student organization, where I went to State Competition for written Apparel and Design my first year, and with Full-Service/Quick-Service Restaurant role-play event my final year. Also, while attending Pinkerton Academy I was a member of the Yearbook staff , working as a co-senior section editor my senior year and photographer.
While attending New Mexico State University, I worked at NMSU's Pan American Special Events Department. I started out as a Ticket Taker and my first day working was asked if I wanted to work as the assistant to the Assistant Director of Special Events (he liked the way I answered the phones), while working there, I worked in the departments of Ushering, Ticket Taking, Box Office, Production, Maintenance, Security, In-house Merchandising, and Parking. Really the only department I didn't work in was in the EMT's Office (couldn't stand the sight of needles). As part of my Program requirements I had to go and complete 2 Internships. The First Internship I did was at Elephant Butte Lake State Park as a Government Intern. I helped give tours, information seminars, worked with the Park Rangers, the Administrative Staff, Maintenance crew, visitor center and as Butte Control for 4th of July weekend. It was a blast! For my 2nd Internship I wanted to do something really fun.... so I went and worked at Walt Disney World in the College Program. Oh the stories I could tell about the fun I had.
So that kinda sorta brings me to now. Why did I become and Teacher and why do I call my students my monkeys. Let me answer the first part.... I became a teacher not because I couldn't handle the "real world" but because I had a desire to help students who were like me when I was in High School. A student who loved learning, but just hated the structure that was mandated. The world was my classroom as far as I was concerned. I also have a desire to help students NOT make the same mistakes that I did, or baring that, to at least be more informed about the choices that affect their lives, even if the student doesn't think it will. It was also because year after year I saw so many students coming into places where I worked not knowing the basics of filling out job applications, or knowing how to file, or even how to answer a phone correctly. That's just a part of the reason why I became a teacher.
Finally, why do I call my students my monkeys. LOL... well see I had this one class that was acting like a bunch of zoo animals and I jokingly called them a bunch of monkeys..... two days later for my 30th birthday, those same students surprised me with a chocolate birthday cake. All around the sides of it had the monkeys from that old game "Barrel of Monkeys".... they also put trick candles on it that almost had the fire department called out to help put them out. And so the Monkeys name stuck. Now you know just how I came up with the Monkeys name and a bit about me. I hope that you keep checking back on this site as I will be adding and changing things frequently.
Enjoy!
